The Greeny Bit
“Leg at work”
On Saturday 5th December 2009 between 11:00-12:00 noon, a world record attempt was organised to plant as many trees as possible across the UK. The Lydden Environment Group (LEG) pictured above, did it’s bit by planting 27 natives trees in and around the new community orchard that is being developed at the village hall field site. The idea of the orchard is to plant fruit and nut trees, which will allow people in the village to legally help themselves to free fruit when the trees grow big enough. Another positive is that our youngsters will be able to see where apples and pears come from, they don’t just come from supermarkets!
Native non-fruit trees were planted in both the new hedgerow that is being developed around the top of the village hall field, and around the orchard helping to reduce noise during very noisy village hall meetings. It will, when grown, also help suck up some of that hot air that’s released during heated debates from time to time!
The hedgerow will help other wildlife as the plants develop and grow, providing homes for insects and other small beasty things. As well as that, as it grows ever more mature, it will provide a valuable barrier between the large flat playing field, and a rather hectic slope that is there at present.
Many thanks must go to those above who gave their sweat, tears, blood and guts on Saturday 5th Dec. Without people like these chappies, the world would be a desert by now, and we would all be dead!
No animals were injured or killed during the making of this article!
