The Greeny Bit
This is the time of year that can cause a great deal of distress to many elderly residents of our village. Pavements and walkways are often covered in wet soggy leaves, meaning that just walking from one place to another can be very dangerous indeed.
The pavements outside Lydden Primary to Broadacre are one example. Leaves and debris from overhanging trees often cover the walkways, and the results can be quite devastating. Older people slip and slide much more readily than younger folks, and as a result, fall related injuries can be very debilitating. I sweep my pavements regularly taking the fallen leaves to the allotment. Leaves make a superb soil improver when dug in!
I’m looking for old house bricks to line to drainage channels around the pond site. If you have any, I would dearly like to hear from you. Water running into the village pond from the roadways erodes soil, which then pours into the pond. This causes the pond to fill with mud and run off from the surrounding areas. If the channels were brick lined, erosion would be kept to a minimum and we would not have the problem of the pond filling with mud and silting up.
If you do have any old bricks to spare, please let me know and I’ll come and pick them up. They will be sent to a very good home, that you can be sure of. And, if you miss them, you can always visit them in their new home, and throw them some bread! Though I do suspect the ducks will eat that instead of the bricks!
Finally, 2012 is not too far off. If you or your organisation are planning an event (St Mary’s church, The Lydden Bell, Lydden Village Hall or others) we will ensure that your event is advertised. LEG is committed to working on behalf of all in the village, and as a result, we’ll ensure that all activities are advertised in advance.
Very finally: Happy New Christmas, and have a wonderful Boxing Day and Merry New Year and Christmas Eve. Look out for the carol singers on the evening of the 21st December! Money welcome! All donations go toward making our environment one of the best in the area!
